STORMWATCH #1 New From DC Comics

Stormwatch #1

Stormwatch #1 is one of DC’s harder Edge books coming out this September courtesy of The Source. They are Stormwatch, a dangerous super human police force whose existence is kept secret from the world Directly following the ominous events of SUPERMAN #1, Adam One leads half the Stormwatch team to recover the [INFORMATION REDACTED] from deep in the Himalayas. Meanwhile, Jack Hawksmoor and the rest of the Stormwatch crew look to recruit two of the deadliest super humans on the planet: Midnighter and Apollo! And if they say no? Perhaps the Martian Manhunter can change their minds…

DC Comics announced in June 2011 that the team would be incorporated into the DC Universe in a new ongoing series written by Paul Cornell and drawn by Miguel Speulveda as part of its September 2011 relaunch of its comics properties. This version of the team will include Jack Hawksmoor, Apollo, Midnighter, and the Martian Manhunter.

Stormwatch 1993 1st series

Stormwatch began in the comic book Stormwatch, published by Image Comics but owned by Jim Lee. Among the main early writers of Stormwatch vol. 1 were Jim Lee, Brandon Choi, H. K. Proger and Ron Marz; among the main early artists were Scott Clark, Brett Booth, Matt Broome and Renato Arlem. The Stormwatch team was run by the United Nations, and overseen from a satellite by their director, “the Weatherman”. The Weatherman was one Henry Bendix, who had cybernetic implants connected to his brain to better monitor various world situations and his Stormwatch teams in action. His field commander was Jackson King, aka Battalion. Other members included Fahrenheit (a young American woman, a pyrokinetic), Hellstrike (an Irish police officer, an energy being), Winter (an ex-Russian Spetznaz officer, an energy absorber), Fuji (a young Japanese man, another energy being trapped in a large, super-strong containment suit), and Diva (a young Italian woman with sonic powers).

Jim Lee has lived to see his 1993 Stormwatch creation come into the new main DC Universe, however not the same group of heroes but it incorporates one of my favorite characters  the Martian Manhunter. I had a feeling DC would find a place for one of DC most interesting heroes. A character from the Silver Age of comics and a group from the 90’s is brought into the 21’st century. It is staged to be very hard hitting get the job done crisis intervention team that is in charge of responding to threats around the globe. It has real potential to be very interesting. How will this group fit into a world with a Justice League. We shall see this September. Stay tuned comic faithful for more. 🙂 Walt

Finally, I hope this is just the beginning of integration of the Wildstorm Characters into the DCU. I certainly plan on supporting these titles. I cannot wait/hope for wildc.a.t.s. integration as well…
